Nightwater Minigames
Five optional loops. The demo gives you Dark Thicket in full — and it feeds the factory, not just your boredom.
Nightwater is a factory game that does not want you staring at pipes for ten hours. Official copy lists five unique minigames, each with its own loop, items, upgrades, and progression. Completing them unlocks buildings, crafts, and buffs you spend outside the minigame. They are optional. They are also the intended use of idle production.
The Steam demo includes the first minigame, Dark Thicket, with full progression. It also previews a second minigame tied to the Mountains biome, without letting you finish that track. This page is about how the system works and how to play the Thicket without wasting your automation.
Why minigames exist
Studio Ashty’s loop is: machines harvest, you go do something else, you come back stronger. Minigames are that “something else.” They are not a separate roguelike you could ship alone. Dark Thicket still has you cutting trees — but the trees, currencies, and skill parchment belong to the minigame, and the rewards come home to The Woods.
If you skip every minigame you can still push resource milestones. You will just unlock fewer buildings and miss buffs that make the factory less annoying. The minigames tier list is our ranking of that trade.
Dark Thicket (demo, full)
Objectives in the demo tell you to explore the Dark Thicket and cut down trees to receive minigame-specific resources. The Thicket has different areas with different trees. You spend those resources on a parchment upgrade menu (Max Time and similar nodes appear in press shots) until you are strong enough to cut the elder tree in the north.
Practical route:
- Get a wood line running in The Woods so the island produces while you are gone. See Getting Started.
- Expand / manifest land if the main quest still blocks the Thicket entrance.
- Loot barrels on the way in — playthroughs find extras such as wheat oil.
- Chop the trees in front of you first. Do not sprint to the elder tree with starter stats.
- Open the upgrade parchment often. Buy the nodes that make chopping faster or last longer.
- Push north only when the elder tree is a fight you can finish, not a wall you tap.
Because machines keep running, a “short Thicket run” is still factory progress. A “long Thicket run” is even better if your chests have room.
Mountains minigame (demo preview)
The 8 May 2026 demo announcement promised a peek at the Mountains biome and its minigame, with milestone items locked. Treat anything you see there as a trailer you can walk through. Do not reset your save because a Mountains bar will not fill. That is working as announced.
The other three minigames
Studio Ashty has not published a public roster of all five names in the materials we used for this wiki. Do not invent them. At launch on 18 September 2026 this page will name whatever the full client shows. Until then, plan around the rule, not the list: five loops, optional, each pays factory power.
If a creator thumbnail claims a minigame that is not Dark Thicket or the Mountains preview, check the date. Playtest builds and the demo are not the same as 1.0.
Buffs you bring home
Minigame rewards are not cosmetics. Official text: new buildings, crafts, and buffs that grow the factory and boost efficiency. That is why the buildings page and this page have to be read together. A harvester you unlock in the Thicket can matter more than a second decorative chest in The Woods.
Spend factory time to unlock the minigame, spend minigame time to unlock factory tools, repeat. That is the intended spiral.
Optional does not mean “skip forever”
Story is optional in a stronger sense: four endings exist for people who hunt clues, and you can still “finish” without them. Minigames are optional in a weaker sense: you can ignore them and still automate, but you are leaving progression on the table. If you hate the Thicket’s chopping loop, do one upgrade pass, grab the buildings, and leave. You do not have to 100% the elder tree on your first night.
Common mistakes
- Entering the Thicket with idle, empty harvesters.
- Treating Thicket trees as the same wood as The Woods. They are a separate currency.
- Ignoring the parchment skill tree and wondering why the elder tree will not fall.
- Assuming all five minigames are in the demo.
- Waiting for a friend to run the Thicket with you. Nightwater is single-player.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Are Nightwater minigames required?
No. They are optional, but they unlock buildings and buffs for the main factory. Skipping them is slower, not impossible.
What minigames are in the demo?
Dark Thicket is included in full. The Mountains minigame is a preview with milestones locked. See the demo guide.
Do factories pause in minigames?
No. Official UI copy says machines continue to operate while you are away. Load chests first.
How many minigames will the full game have?
Studio Ashty lists five unique minigames for the finished game. Only one is fully playable in the demo.
