Demo will not boot, the world slides off the HUD, or the pad still wants a keyboard. Start here before you refund the evening.

Nightwater Troubleshooting

This page collects player-reported Nightwater client problems from Steam discussions and demo footage. It is not an official Studio Ashty support doc. Confirm anything that sounds like a patch on the updates hub and the Steam store. The full game still launches 18 September 2026; the demo is the build most people are fighting today.

Demo will not launch

Steam community reports (including CachyOS / Linux): playtest ran, demo shows “launching,” then closes. That is a boot problem, not a missing tutorial.

Try, in order:

  1. Verify the demo files in Steam.
  2. Run Steam and the demo with the GPU’s proprietary driver, not a leftover playtest prefix.
  3. If you use Proton on Linux, try the native Linux build if Steam offers one (several databases list native Linux for the product). If native fails, try a current Proton Experimental — and say which one when you report on Discord.
  4. Delete the playtest prefix/compatdata if you still have one, so the demo is not inheriting an old shader cache.
  5. Check GPU overlay software (afterburner, ReShade, Steam recording) and disable it once.

If it still dies before a window, post GPU, distro, and a Proton log on the Discord listed on official links. Older Steam posts used a second invite (discord.gg/D5WpxPZhxE) that players later called broken; use the invite on the current store news post if one 404s.

“What happened to the demo?”

August–September Steam threads asked whether the demo was limited-time because YouTube still showed it. Official copy: the demo launched 8 May 2026 and was meant to remain until the 18 September 2026 launch. If the download button is missing on your account, check the store page while logged in, family-share rules, and region. Do not treat a YouTube VOD as proof the demo closed.

World and HUD disagree

A 1920×1080 report: the 3D world shifts as if it were a different resolution; UI stays put; black bar at the bottom. That is a display bug, not a broken bind.

Try windowed, then borderless, then fullscreen. Disable GPU integer scaling / “perform scaling on: GPU.” If you use a 21:9 or ultrawide, start at 16:9 until launch patches land. Camera comfort (Steam feature list) is for motion, not for this crop.

Controller still wants a keyboard

Steam lists full controller support. A June 2026 thread said the pad works but many actions still need a keyboard. March playtest notes promised better controller support; some of that shipped, not all of it by the sound of that thread.

Practical split:

  • Move, look, gather: pad is fine.
  • Build hologram, some parchment menus, text fields: keep a keyboard in reach.
  • Steam Deck: official compatibility was still Unknown before launch week. Test the demo; do not assume Verified.

Rebind gather to a comfortable trigger. You hold it a lot in hour one, then almost never after a harvester exists. See controls.

Performance hitches in The Woods

UE5 + post-process (the look people compare to Borderlands). Minimum is a GTX 1650 / RX 470-class card and 8 GB RAM. If the void sea stutters when you turn:

  • Cap at 60.
  • Put the install on an SSD (shader compile).
  • Lower effects before you lower resolution — the HUD bug above can get worse if you only change res.

Recommended is 12 GB RAM and six physical cores. Laptops with a “1650” in the name are not desktop 1650s.

Save, cloud, and “my factory vanished”

Steam Cloud is listed for the product. Demo-to-1.0 conversion was not promised in the posts we tracked. Plan a fresh island on 18 September unless a Steam news post says otherwise. Moving buildings does not spend resources; if a machine disappeared, check you are in the same save slot, not a new island.

How to file a useful report

Studio Ashty asked for feedback next to the demo. Useful: milestone that will not complete, pipe that drops items, boot log, localization typo, pad action with no bind. Less useful: “add more biomes” (that is the launch) or “needs belts like Factorio” (the pipes are short on purpose — automation).

Nightwater is single-player. There is no server status page. If Steam itself is down, nobody on this wiki can pipe your wood for you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

The Nightwater demo closes on launch. What now?

Verify files, try native Linux vs Proton if you are on Linux, and disable overlays. Report GPU and distro on Discord from links.

Is the demo gone?

Officially it was meant to stay up until 18 September 2026. Check the live Steam page. YouTube is not the store.

Does a controller work without a keyboard?

Movement and gathering usually do. Community reports say some menus still want keys. Keep a keyboard nearby.

Will my demo save carry into 1.0?

No conversion was promised in the news posts we used. Plan to start a new island unless Studio Ashty says otherwise on updates.
