Nightwater Launch Guide

Nightwater 1.0 launches on 18 September 2026 at 08:00 PDT. The demo closes. Your island starts clean. This page is the route through the first hour — which milestones matter, which buildings to place first, and how the lighthouse fits into day one without spoiling the four endings.

If you played the demo, the core loop is familiar. This page tells you what changes at launch and what the demo did not teach you.

Before 08:00 PDT

  1. Install the game now. Download and patch while you have time. UE5 shader compile on a spinning drive is a 20-minute tax.
  2. Check specs. The system requirements page has the published minimums. If your PC idles at the title screen, that is a driver or overlay issue, not a wiki problem.
  3. Join Discord. If the unlock stalls, the first report will be on official links. We will not paste a Discord ping faster than the real channel.
  4. Wishlist. Steam sends a ping when the buy button goes live. That is more reliable than refreshing a wiki page.

The first ten minutes

  1. Watch the title. Nightwater opens with a voice line and a broken lighthouse on the horizon. That is the game.
  2. Walk forward. Punch the first tree you see. Wood unlocks.
  3. Keep punching until the first wood milestone pays. Do not pause to admire the void sea yet.
  4. Punch rocks. Stone, clay, and wheat appear in that order. The milestone menu (parchment icon) is your quest log.
  5. Open craft when it unlocks. The recipe screen is the first thing that makes Nightwater feel like a factory game, not a walking simulator.

The first factory

By minute ten you should have:

  • Wood, stone, clay, and wheat discovered
  • A milestone bar filling on at least one resource
  • The craft menu open and recipes visible

Place a wooden harvester on the densest tree patch you can find. Then craft a primitive chest (capacity 30) and a primitive pipe (costs oil and gears). Connect: harvester → pipe → chest. That is the moment the game stops being a tutorial and starts being yours.

If the pipe costs more than you have, the craft menu shows which ingredient is missing. Gears almost always need clay. Clay is easy to overlook. It is not optional.

See the automation page for the full picture. The one-line version: pipe the harvester, then go punch something else.

Which milestones to rush

The demo taught players to fill every bar before expanding. The launch version may have different pacing. The priority order:

  1. Wood — harvesters unlock first and make everything else faster.
  2. Stone — unlocks the rock crusher, which handles clay and ore too.
  3. Clay — the quiet gate for gears, pipes, and early structures.
  4. Wheat — leads toward oil, which the pipe needs.

Do not try to finish every bar in The Woods before you expand. The next biome has resources The Woods does not. Manifest land when the objective prompt appears.

The lighthouse on day one

The Lighthouse page explains the four endings and optional story. Day one, you will see it on the horizon. You will not reach it on day one. That is correct behavior — the full game has more ages, more biomes, and more milestones between the starting beach and the lighthouse door.

Walk toward it if you want atmosphere. Do not expect a boss fight. The game is an incremental factory with an optional mystery on top.

What the demo did not teach

Ages. The demo stayed in the first age. The full game goes from sticks and stones → Bronze Age → Industrial Era → future. Each age is a new set of milestones and buildings. The lighthouse does not appear until later ages.

Five minigames. The demo had one complete minigame (Dark Thicket) and one locked preview (Mountains). The full game has five. The minigames page explains how they feed your factory.

Manifesting land. You do not walk to new biomes. You spend milestone progress to pull new land out of the void. The biomes page has the full mechanic.

No demo save. Studio Ashty did not announce a save conversion. Your demo island does not carry over. Start fresh, take notes, and enjoy the clean factory.

Platform and access notes

  • Steam Deck compatibility was still Unverified before launch. Test on Deck hardware before you trust the store tag.
  • Full controller support is listed. Some menus still want a keyboard in practice.
  • Linux is listed as a native build by several databases. Test the demo if you are on a distro.
  • Save anytime. The store page lists “playable without timed input.” You are allowed to pause.

The island starts at 08:00 PDT. The lighthouse is waiting. Your factory is not.
